Regular dental checkups are the best way to help your smile stay healthy throughout your life. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that most patients visit their dentists twice a year for a dental exam. Some patients may need to visit us more frequently, especially if they have a history of periodontal disease, are at high risk for cavities, smoke or have other risk factors.
Our dental exam expert Dr. Shamoiel will work with you to identify the best treatment schedule for your needs.
At your next dental exam, Dr. Shamoiel will begin by reviewing your medical history. We may ask about your lifestyle habits, medications, allergies, and any medical conditions that you have had. We will then perform a visual examination of your teeth, gums, and other oral structures.
Each part of your mouth is carefully examined to identify any new cavities, damaged or worn restorations or tartar buildup. We will check your gums to ensure that they are tightly adhered to your teeth. If there are gaps, or periodontal pockets, we will measure them to make better recommendations.
After we check your teeth and gums, Dr. Shamoiel will carefully clean each tooth. Scalers, ultrasonic tools and other equipment will be used to clean every surface of every tooth. This dislodges tartar and plaque buildup.
Once the buildup is removed, we use a special polishing tool to remove superficial stains and leave your teeth feeling squeaky clean.
Dr. Shamoiel, our Thousand Oaks dental X-rays expert, may take dental X-rays to better see above and below the gum line and between the teeth. Dental X-rays allow us to see hidden structures and surfaces that may not be visible to the unassisted eye. They allow us to identify infections, impacted teeth or cavities that form beneath restorations between teeth or under the gum line.
We may take either traditional X-rays or digital X-rays. Dr. Shamoiel may make specific treatment recommendations after reviewing your dental exam and X-rays.
